My Favorite Things - Rodgers/Hammerstein/Andrews, Jarreau/Miller/Battle


You've probably heard of The Sound of Music and if you haven't heard of that, you've probably heard of Julie Andrews, who was the first to record Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'My Favourite Things' from The Sound of Music.  

Have a listen to a very different take on the song with opera singer Kathleen Battle performed and arranged by Al Jarreau and Marcus Miller, a fusion of jazz and operatic style using a musical song from 1959:

Eitetsu Hayashi is an acclaimed Japanese musician best known for his solo performance work in taiko. Taiko are a broad rang of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japanese, the term refers to any kind of drum, but outside of Japan, it is used specifically to refer to any of the various Japanese drums called wadaiko . Paganini and the Violin

This very day in 1840, marks the day that the life of the great violin virtuoso and composer, Niccolo Paganini came to an end. Servetto, and then with the celebrated Giacomo Costa. At the age of 11, the young Paganini made his first appearance and the studied with Alessandro Rolla and Gaspare Ghiretti in Parma (where Paganini's tomb can be found). In 1797, in his mid-teens, Paganini toured Lombardy, where with each concert, his reputation grew. Gaining his independence soon after, Niccolo indulged excessively in gambling and romantic love affairs, so much so that at one point he pawned his valuable Amati violin due to gambling debts. Сирень, 'Lilacs', Sergei Rachmaninov Listen to this beautiful song 'Lilacs' by Sergei Rachmaninov, performed by Nicolai Gedda: YouTube Lilac painting by Elena Barkhatova 'Lilacs' was composed by Rachmaninoff in April 1902 along with ten other songs. The poem is by Ekaterina Beketova (18th C Russian poet) and it describes the persona in search of happiness, saying that happiness is where the lilacs are: По утру, на заре, По росистой траве, Я пойду свежим утром дышать; И в душистую тень, Где теснится сирень, Я пойду своё счастье искать...
