On this day in 1936, Prokofiev's symphonic tale of 'Peter and the Wolf' was premiered in Moscow. The work, written for orchestra and narrator, tells a Russian folk tale 'Petya i Volk' and was commissioned by the Moscow Children's Theatre. The story is about a boy and his animal friends capturing a wolf:

Since the premiere, the work has introduced many young listeners to 'classical' music and helped train them to recognise the distinct sounds produced by various instruments of the orchestra. The work's popularity grew quickly, especially after it was released as a recording, adapted for ballet and made into an animated film by Walt Disney.
